How to Build a Brick Paver Patio in Your Yard

Laying a patio made from brick pavers makes a good DIY project for your home. Here's how to go about it:

  • Start by established a border around the patio.
  • Fill the patio space with several inches of base material—such as crushed granite, recycled crushed concrete, or coarse sand—to provide a firm foundation and aid in drainage.
  • Use a straight piece of lumber as a screed board to distribute and level the base material.
  • Compact the base material using either a motorized plate compactor or a hand tamp.
  • Lay the pavers on the base material, making sure they're level.
  • Sweep sand or a sand polymer mix into the cracks between the pavers.

Making a Year-Round Pledge on Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated worldwide on April 22nd. While many people join their local crews for a day to clean up their community, there are ways you can make a lasting impact on the environment by making your home a little greener.

In addition to recycling plastic and paper, make sure to recycle those old electronics. Turning off the water while brushing your teeth saves a surprising amount of water. Replacing your HVAC air filter regularly, and adding more insulation to your home can also make a big difference in your carbon footprint and bottom line.

Stay Safe this Spring

Springtime for many people brings extra cleaning and yard work, but if you're not careful, it also brings a trip to the ER. To avoid an accident keep a few things in mind:

  • Before starting a project, put on proper protective clothing for the task -- a hat, gloves or goggles, as appropriate.
  • When trying to reach high areas in your house, use a small ladder or sturdy step-stool rather than risk standing on furniture that could tip or slide.
  • Avoid long periods of repetitive-motion activities such as raking, digging or pruning while doing yard work. Take frequent breaks and replenish fluids to prevent dehydration.

Finally, most injuries occur when you are in a rush doing a task, so take your time.
