Protect Your Home, Improve Your Outdoors

Danny Lipford Newsletter
May 2011

May is the time for outdoor projects and we've got plenty of ideas in this newsletter and on dannylipford.com. Plus, the recent tornadoes have everyone thinking about what they should do before and after a storm.

What to Do in the Aftermath of a Storm

As storm victims recover, it's important to take certain precautions. Here are a few tips from the Federal Alliance for Safe Housing (FLASH):

  • Stay turned to local news organizations for important announcements.
  • Remember that you may not have immediate access to your home. Emergency rescue crews, power crews and others may be attending to special needs.
  • Make sure that you have current identification.
  • Avoid sight-seeing or entering a storm-ravaged area unnecessarily. You could be mistaken for a looter.
  • Avoid downed power lines even if they look harmless.
  • Avoid turning the power on at your home if there is flooding present.
  • Use a camera or camcorder to record any damage done to your home before any repairs are attempted.

Raised Bed Gardening

More and more people are using raised beds in their gardens. The main advantage is you can completely control the quality of the soil you have to work with. It's best to have a bed at least 6″ tall to allow a sufficient amount of soil, but many people prefer 16″ to 20″ high so that you can sit on the edge of the bed while you are working with your plants.

Lawn Mower Maintenance

It's easier than you think to take care of your mower and your effort is rewarded with a healthier lawn. So, at the start of the season, here's what you need to do:

  • Change the oil: Even if you don't think it needs it, do it! The oil should be changed at the beginning of every season.
  • Change the spark plug: Many people like to change the plug every year so you're starting every cutting season with a new spark plug.
  • Clean the air filter: In some rare cases, you may need to replace the filter, but most of the time, a simple cleaning will do.
  • Blades: Sharpen or replace. A dull blade tears your grass instead of cutting it, which can lead to a diseased lawn.
